Sen. Smith hails Legis. Abrahams in Nassau visit

State Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith made a quiet trip to Nassau County yesterday, sources said.
The Queens Democrat visited a childcare center with Nassau legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) and then spoke at a small luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. In his remarks, Smith emphasized the importance of Democrats winning control of the Republican-dominated Senate next year, the sources said.
The GOP has a two-seat edge over Democrats, and Republicans Kemp Hannon of Garden City and Carl Marcellino of Syosset have been targeted for defeat. Republicans hope to unseat freshman Sen. Craig Johnson of Port Washington, the Island’s only Democratic state senator.
Smith praised Abrahams as a rising star in the party. The pair are proteges of U.S. Rep. Floyd Flake. Abrahams once served as a legislative assistant and deputy district director to Flake.
