Abrahams Sponsors $6.2 M for Guy Lombardo Ave. improvements & transfer

Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) and members of the Public Works Committee of the Nassau County Legislature approved an agreement between the county and the Village of Freeport that will provide $6.2 million in county funds towards a massive improvement project for Guy Lombardo Avenue. The agreement also includes the transfer of the roadway to the village once the improvement project is completed.

"This intermunicipal agreement is a win-win for the people of the county and the Village of Freeport," said Legislator Abrahams. "The Village gets improvements to its busiest thoroughfare and the county provides the funding but, ultimately, will no longer be responsible for the road."

Along with the county’s $6.2 million contribution to the road project, the project is also slated to receive federal funding reimbursement from the New York State Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) of $4.8 million. In addition, as part of the Transportation Equity Act presently under consideration by Congress, this project is earmarked to receive $1.2 million.

The construction will include Guy Lombardo Avenue from its intersection with the southerly side of Sunrise Highway, Freeport, to its intersection with the northerly side of Atlantic Avenue, a distance of about 2.19 miles. The project includes construction of new curbs and driveway aprons; installation of pedestrian access ramps at all intersections; new asphalt pavement; new concrete sidewalks; restoration of grass areas; replacement and upgrading of existing storm water drainage system; new drainage pipes, catch basins; and installation of brick walkways and antique lighting between Atlantic Avenue and Southside Avenue.

The county will transfer the roadway to the village 30 days after completing the project. The village will then be responsible for the road’s maintenance, repair, cleaning etc. The agreement is expected to pass through the full legislature on May 23.
